The fit:
Arable farms often have buildings standing empty for much of the year and grain or straw on hand. Finishing cattle under AFU status can turn both into an enterprise without buying land.
The advantages:
Home-grown cereals go into the ration rather than off the farm at harvest price, and muck goes back onto the ground. Cattle bought at sensible money finish on feed you already own.
What to watch:
Stock work is a commitment, and a shed built for grain is not always a shed built for cattle. Cost the conversion properly.
Next step?
Ask your fieldsman what type of cattle would suit your buildings and ration before you spend anything.
