We need a bit of Jamie again – or a cold wind!!

Twelve months ago Jamie Oliver stood up on Channel 4, with his buy British campaign, and what a difference it made to sales of British pig meat products in February. We could really do with the same again, as the market place clearly came under pressure with more pigs available, what appeared to be less demand and a processing sector that was determined in places to reduce the price for pigs on the week. We are glad to report here at MQ that although some prices have fallen slightly, in the majority of outlets, prices have stood on or moved up a touch in line with the DAPP. Spot bacon quotes at the top end of the market eased back by 2-3p/kg. However, the vast number of pigs in the UK remains the same, on or around the 140p/kg mark. Towards the end of trading today, there were certainly pigs still waiting to find a home, with some processors prepared to offer prices below the market in a hope that it may affect the trade going forward. Whilst demand may be poor today, we must remember that pig numbers are still tight, meaning that downward pressure is unlikely to be maintained for long.

Lighter fresh meat outlets, who have felt the most discomfort from the past few weeks, remained steady on the week with all prices standing on. Cutter prices start around the 140p/kg level with lighter pork pigs in places above 150p/kg for the right quality of pig.

Good news can be reported regarding cull sows, as this market place saw something of a revival with prices moving forward typically 5p/kg on the week. If this trend continues we will see cull sow quotes break the 100p/kg mark next week, and this could also be seen as a positive sign for the clean pig market, as cull sow quotes tend to set the trend for the trade in the coming weeks.

And to conclude there are reports that cold weather is about to descend on us again next week it will no doubt produce difficult production and delivery conditions, but on the positive side, should help with the poorer demand being experienced at the retail end of the market.

Come on Jamie let’s have another program.
